How to Use an OBD2 Scanner and Save the Evidence

Using an OBD2 scanner? Save every code, its status and the freeze frame before anyone presses erase, so your mechanic gets the whole record.

Save everything before anyone presses erase

The short brief
  • Park safely with the engine off, then plug the scanner into your car's 16-pin diagnostic connector.
  • Switch to ignition on, engine off, and photograph every code, its status and any freeze-frame screen.
  • Leave the erase button alone. On the Innova 5210 it wipes the codes and freeze frame and resets the monitors.
  • Smoke, a strong fuel smell or a possible leak? Don't scan, and call roadside assistance if the car shouldn't be driven.
  • Give your mechanic the whole record. A code shows where testing starts.

A trouble code tells your mechanic where to start testing, and the testing confirms where the problem is. That makes the whole record the useful part of a first scan. We'd photograph every screen before pressing anything else, because on the Innova 5210 the ERASE button removes the trouble codes and freeze-frame data and resets the monitor status (opens in a new tab).

The steps below use an Innova 5210, with the car parked and the engine off. Have the scanner and its instructions, your owner's manual, and a phone or paper ready. Using a different scanner? Check that it's compatible with your car before you plug it in.

If something felt wrong on the road, start there

StopDon't start scanning if there's smoke, a strong fuel smell or a possible fuel leak, or if you can't secure the car. Don't restart the engine just to see a flashing light, shaking, power loss, smoke or a fuel smell again. Follow your owner's manual's stop instructions, and call roadside assistance if the car shouldn't be driven.

A light that comes on for a moment when you start the car can simply be the lamp check. A light flashing while the engine runs is different. On a 2017 Lincoln MKX, for example, a blinking service engine soon light means a misfire is happening that could damage the catalytic converter (opens in a new tab). What the light does and what you should do can vary, so follow your own car's warning instructions.

Write things down while they're fresh: whether the light was steady or flashing with the engine running, what the car did, roughly how fast you were going, the road conditions and any other warnings. Tell the roadside provider or mechanic about any shaking, power loss, smoke or fuel smell.

Make sure the scanner can read your car

Check that the scanner covers your car's year, make, model, engine and original sales market. Many US gasoline cars and light trucks from model year 1996 on use OBD2 (opens in a new tab), but diesels and some other vehicles have exceptions, so check your exact vehicle as well as the year. The Innova 5210 is designed to scan both engine and ABS problems, but its features vary by vehicle (opens in a new tab), so confirm what your tool reads on your car, including emissions codes and any available freeze-frame data. A basic emissions scan reaches the engine and emissions codes. ABS brakes, SRS airbags, hybrid or high-voltage systems, manufacturer-enhanced information and other control modules need a tool that supports them. If a different warning light sent you to the scanner, check that your tool covers that system. If reaching a system needs an unfamiliar authorization or a security-gateway workaround, stop and contact the tool's support team or an automotive diagnostic technician.

Match the scanner's instructions to its hardware and firmware version, and look up where your car's 16-pin diagnostic connector is before you try to plug in. Then find your car's documented way to switch the ignition on with the engine off. On push-button and hybrid cars, follow that button sequence exactly. If you can't find it, or can't safely hold that mode, we'd let a qualified technician capture the data instead.

Park on level ground away from traffic, set the parking brake, secure the transmission and use wheel chocks as your car's and scanner's instructions require. Keep the engine off, with the ignition off whenever you connect or disconnect.

Route the cable away from your feet and the pedals. If the connector is damaged, hard to reach or you're not sure about it, stop there. Don't force the plug or take trim or wiring apart to get to it.

Plug in and save every code

These connection and code-reading steps follow Innova's 5210 user manual (opens in a new tab). Check that they match your own scanner's instructions before you start.

  1. With the ignition off, line the scanner plug up with your car's 16-pin diagnostic connector. The plug is keyed, so it fits only one way and should go in without force.
  2. Switch to your car's documented ignition-on, engine-off mode. Let the 5210 connect on its own, and pick your car's make if it asks. Press ENTER to skip the optional RepairSolutions2 QR screen. If the scanner stays dark or reports a link problem, use the connection checks further down.
  3. Photograph the first result before you move to another screen. Keep the complete code, its definition, status, sequence number and system label together.
  4. Press and release DOWN to move to the next powertrain code. If DOWN doesn't take you to the next code, press and release DTC/FF instead, which Innova's controls guide (opens in a new tab) says scrolls through the codes when pressed repeatedly. Keep going until you've recorded every code the scanner retrieved.
  5. Save every screen, including repeated codes with different statuses, missing definitions and no-code messages. Give each code-and-status pair its own entry, and record the readiness monitors exactly as shown.

Copy labels like stored, pending and permanent exactly as the scanner shows them, because each one means something different to your mechanic. Don't buy a part based on a code's definition alone, since each code has its own testing steps to confirm where the problem is. A permanent code has its own clearing rule. On cars that support permanent codes, only the OBD2 system can clear one, after it confirms the fault it found is no longer present (opens in a new tab). An erase command or a battery disconnect won't remove it.

No codes? Save the exact message and the systems that were scanned. A clean result covers only what the scanner could read, so any symptoms still need checking. On the 5210, a yellow light can mean some monitors haven't finished (opens in a new tab), so go by the screen, not the light.

Keep the freeze frame with its code

Freeze frame is a stored snapshot of how the engine was running when a fault was recorded. Live data shows what's happening right now. On the 5210, freeze frame belongs to the priority code, code #1 (opens in a new tab), so there may not be a snapshot for every code.

  1. With code #1 on screen, press FF/DTC to see its freeze-frame snapshot. If nothing comes up, write “unavailable” and leave it at that. Live readings show current conditions, so they can't stand in for the snapshot.
  2. Use UP and DOWN to step through each parameter, and photograph or write down its name, value and unit together.
  3. If a parameter name is abbreviated, press and hold ENTER to see the full name, then press ENTER to go back.
  4. File the snapshot under the priority code it came with. Copy it under another code only if the scanner shows a separate snapshot for that code.

The scanner won't connect or shows nothing useful

Start with what the scanner actually does, because a dark scanner, a link error and a phone app with no vehicle data each need different checks.

If a wired scanner stays dark, recheck the connection and ignition mode above. One possibility is no power at the diagnostic connector. If it still won't power up, have a technician find out why, and leave fuse panels, terminals and wiring alone as part of this scan.

If the scanner powers up but reports a link error, confirm the vehicle you selected and the ignition mode. Photograph the exact message and contact the scanner maker's support or an automotive diagnostic technician.

If your phone pairs but the app gets no vehicle data, check the adapter maker's setup steps for your model. For OBDLink, use its Connection Wizard and close other OBD apps, because an OBDLink adapter can connect to only one app at a time (opens in a new tab). If it still can't reach the car, contact the maker's support.

If the scan finishes without any relevant codes, check which systems the tool reached and keep the result. A symptom tied to another warning system or an unsupported module may need a different scan tool and a technician.

Before you contact support, gather the car's year, make, model, engine and original sales market, plus the scanner or adapter model and its hardware, firmware and app versions. Add the exact error, the ignition mode you used, the systems you selected, and photos of the screen and the connector you can reach without taking anything apart.

Unplug and hand over the full record

Switch the ignition off before you unplug the 5210, and put the scanner and cable away before anyone drives the car.

Keep the original photos and any complete scanner report. Send them to your mechanic with the scan date, your car's details and odometer reading, the scanner version, the engine-off mode you used and your symptom notes. Mention when the problem started and any recent battery work, code clearing or service. Include no-code results, systems the tool couldn't reach, missing freeze frame and the readiness screens along with the codes.

Readiness shows whether the emissions monitors have finished their checks. Recently cleared codes, or a battery that was disconnected or replaced, can leave monitors incomplete (opens in a new tab), so keep the result exactly as displayed. If an emissions inspection is due, check the rules for your car and where you live, because inspections have their own readiness requirements.
