PG&E and GM Energy have announced (opens in a new tab) the Smart Charge Bundle. The companies say eligible customers can receive home charger hardware without a charge and $15 in monthly PG&E bill credits after installation.
PG&E says managed charging could save participants as much as $50 monthly beyond the credit by scheduling charging when electricity is cheaper and demand is lower.
Customers can choose between two GM Energy chargers. The companies describe PowerUp 2 as a Level 2 option for everyday use. They say the PowerShift Charger can supply power from a compatible EV to a home during an outage when used with GM Energy equipment.
How to sign up
Customers buying or leasing a new Chevrolet, GMC or Cadillac EV can enroll through participating dealerships in Northern and Central California. Enrollment includes joining PG&E's EV Charge Manager program.
With managed charging, the car is set to draw power during cheaper hours, and drivers can take over and charge right away if they choose. WeaveGrid provides the software that decides when charging happens and works to keep demand from overloading local grid equipment. That tool goes by the name Distribution-Integrated System Capacity Orchestration, or DISCO.
Customers who want participation details can contact their nearest local dealer or use the GM Energy Enrollment Portal. PG&E serves more than 16 million people across 70,000 square miles, and it is a subsidiary of PG&E Corporation, which trades on the NYSE under PCG. General Motors trades on the NYSE under GM, and its brands include Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet and GMC.
