Pep Boys is offering towing throughout October with no charge for the first 10 miles when the destination is one of its service centers, giving drivers with potentially unsafe vehicles a way to reach a shop without driving there (opens in a new tab). The company also identifies seven warning signs that can warrant stopping for professional help, including braking trouble, overheating and tire damage.

Pep Boys says a brake pedal that sinks or feels soft, weaker braking or grinding can signal trouble, and drivers should stop driving if they suspect brake failure or cannot stop safely. A tire with exposed cords, a bulging sidewall or other damage can compromise control and raise the chance of failure. The company advises arranging a tow if a spare cannot be fitted safely or none is available.

What drivers should do

For overheating indicated by steam, a red temperature gauge or a warning light, Pep Boys advises stopping somewhere safe, shutting the engine off and arranging towing because continued driving can severely damage the engine. It also advises against further driving when fluid quickly collects beneath the vehicle or a leak occurs alongside warning lights or altered performance.

While awaiting assistance, drivers should reach a safe spot promptly, switch their hazard lights on and keep away from traffic, according to Pep Boys. Pep Boys says its technicians can assess the fault and explain which repairs may be necessary for safe operation.
