BMW has announced the eighth-generation 3 Series, and for the first time the lineup includes a fully electric model. The BMW i3 joins the gasoline versions, giving buyers a choice between electric and combustion power in the same family (opens in a new tab).
The i3 50 xDrive is built on the Neue Klasse architecture and BMW estimates its range at up to 468 miles. It uses a dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup rated at 463 hp, and BMW says its DC fast charging peaks at 400 kW.
The gasoline versions use 48V mild-hybrid technology. BMW identifies the M350 xDrive as its gasoline flagship, with an inline six-cylinder rated at 437 hp. The company quotes a 3.9-second 0-60 mph time and says the model adds a Drift Moment feature using rear-wheel drive.
Pricing starts at $49,900 for the 330 and $51,900 for the 330 xDrive. The M350 xDrive is $65,900, and the i3 50 xDrive is $61,500. Every figure requires an additional $1,350 for destination and handling.
Design and technology
The new 3 Series adopts a unified Neue Klasse look across electric and gasoline variants, with a 2.5-box profile, a long wheelbase and short overhangs. It is slightly larger than the car it replaces, with wider tracks front and rear, though BMW notes that dimensions vary between the i3 and the gasoline models.
Inside, BMW Panoramic iDrive brings BMW Panoramic Vision to the dashboard, and a 17.9-inch Central Display runs BMW Operating System X. A BMW 3D Head-Up Display is available.
BMW lists eight wheel designs for the i3, with diameters spanning 19 to 21 inches; 19-inch wheels are standard. Gasoline versions have 19-inch wheels as standard, with 20-inch options. BMW says buyers will have eleven exterior colors to choose from at launch. It also plans to expand the palette with BMW Individual finishes during 2027.
The M Sport package is optional and standard on M Performance models. The M350 xDrive gets a standard rear spoiler and quad exhaust tailpipes, and optional M Yellow Lights inspired by GT racing cars and the BMW M Hybrid V8. The Iconic Glow exterior package, which adds contour lighting to the kidney grilles with three dynamic animations, is standard on M Performance models.
The electric option
BMW puts the i3 50 xDrive's estimated maximum range at 468 miles and its peak DC charging power at 400 kW.
The i3's range estimate makes it a notable addition to the lineup, though that figure remains BMW's estimate.
