HEVO said today that it is joining a technology evaluation program with Oak Ridge National Laboratory and BMW focused on next-generation wireless charging. The company is contributing engineering know-how, staff support and circular coil designs as BMW runs bench tests, which will assess how well they work with ORNL's proprietary polyphase coil technology (opens in a new tab).
The effort follows earlier ORNL and BMW demonstrations of polyphase wireless charging systems. According to HEVO, the automotive industry's interest in polyphase charging comes from what it could do for power density, efficiency and packaging, along with its ability to serve future electric and autonomous vehicle uses.
HEVO calls itself a New York-based Tier 1 supplier and developer of the patented Rezonant wireless charging hardware and the Journey software platform. The company says it holds a license to ORNL technology.
What the testing is meant to show
The bench testing is intended to evaluate how circular coil designs work alongside ORNL's polyphase coil approach. HEVO said the effort continues ORNL and BMW work on advanced wireless charging architectures meant to support future electric mobility platforms.
Jeremy McCool, Founder and CEO of HEVO, said, "Wireless charging will be a foundational technology for the future of electric and autonomous transportation." He added that the company wants to bring lessons from its commercial wireless charging installations to the table and to help assess technologies that could serve future electric vehicle ecosystems.
HEVO also said it believes wireless charging will play a growing role in automated vehicle operations, fleet utilization and the continued evolution of electric transportation systems. The company did not announce a production date, pricing or which BMW models might use the technology.
HEVO's involvement follows earlier BMW news from its venture arm. In August, BMW i Ventures said it invested in CodeRabbit to advance independent AI review in software development, according to BMW Group (USA) (opens in a new tab).
