Toyota today announced a safety recall covering certain model year 2026 RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid vehicles, with approximately 31,000 vehicles involved in the U.S (opens in a new tab). For owners of those vehicles, the repair will be a software update performed by a Toyota dealer on the electronic control unit (ECU) affected by the recall.
The potential fault is in an ECU that controls the plug-in hybrid system, and it can shut that system down while the vehicle is being driven. At higher speeds, that shutdown can leave the vehicle without motive power, creating an increased risk that the driver will be involved in a crash.
What owners should do
Toyota will contact all known owners whose vehicles are included and direct them to bring their vehicle to a Toyota dealer for the repair. Owners are due to receive notification by early December 2026, and the dealer's update to the affected ECU software will carry no charge for the owner.
Owners can check whether their vehicle is included through the recall lookup offered by Toyota or NHTSA, using either their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) or their license plate details. For additional questions about the recall, Toyota offers customer support through the Toyota Brand Engagement Center, which owners can reach at 1-800-331-4331.
