General Motors is recalling 1,559 potentially affected Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra trucks from the 2016 and 2017 model years because of a fault in the roof rail air bag inflator. The campaign covers the 2016 Silverado 2500 and 3500, the 2016 Sierra 2500 and 3500, and the 2016-2017 Silverado 1500 and Sierra 1500 (opens in a new tab). NHTSA assigned the recall number 26V611000, and GM's own reference for it is N262569920.
In the affected trucks, the inflator's end cap can come loose, or the inflator wall can split. Either failure could release compressed gas and propel the end cap or other inflator debris into the cabin, raising injury risk.
What owners should do
Dealers will swap out both roof rail air bag modules at no cost to the owner. GM expects to mail notification letters to owners on November 9, 2026. Owners can check whether their truck is included by searching its VIN at NHTSA.gov, where the recall was posted September 24, 2026.
Chevrolet owners can reach customer service at 1-800-222-1020, and GMC owners at 1-888-988-7267. The notice does not tell drivers to stop driving these trucks or to park them outside.
