Rivian is recalling 98,828 potentially affected vehicles from three model lines, according to NHTSA recall 26V597000, which the company filed under manufacturer recall FSAM-1866 (opens in a new tab). The campaign covers certain 2022-2027 R1S, 2022-2026 R1T and the 2027 R2.
The defect is a software behavior in reverse. A notification can block the rearview camera image, so the vehicles do not meet the rear visibility requirements of FMVSS 111. The obstruction can limit rearward visibility and increase crash risk. NHTSA lists the affected component as back over prevention.
Rivian has made the software fix available through a free over-the-air update. NHTSA received the recall report on September 16, 2026.
What owners should do
Owner letters are expected to go out on November 9, 2026. On that same date, owners will be able to check whether their vehicle is included by searching its VIN on NHTSA.gov.
Owners with questions can reach Rivian customer service at 1-888-748-4261. The notice does not tell owners to stop driving or to park outside.
